About
W2gMatch, and how its tax pages are written
W2gMatch is a small company with one product: it takes a gambler's tax documents, the W-2Gs, 1099s, operator statements, the IRS transcript and the bank records, and turns them into a reconciled workpaper for the firm preparing the return. The tax answer pages exist because the questions behind those documents were being answered badly everywhere we looked.
Who we are
W2gMatch is built by a small team that works on gambling tax documents every day: the W-2Gs, 1099s, casino and sportsbook win/loss statements and IRS transcripts that a gambling return depends on. The team writes and maintains the tax answer pages and is responsible for their accuracy.
Editorial policy for the tax pages
- One question per page, answered first. The first paragraph is the answer. The rest is the detail and the exceptions.
- Every rule has a source with a date on it. A statement of law or of an operator's practice is followed by a numbered reference to the IRS publication, statute, state revenue document or operator help page it came from, listed at the foot of the page with the date printed on that document. Where the only available source is secondary, the list says so.
- Every page is dated. The date under the title is the day the page was last checked against its sources. When a source changes, the page changes and the date moves.
- Uncertainty is stated, not smoothed over. Where the IRS has not ruled, the page says so and describes the positions practitioners take, rather than picking one and presenting it as settled.
- Review. Pages are written by W2gMatch and checked against the cited documents before publication. A page shows “Reviewed by” only when a named professional with stated credentials has reviewed it; until then it shows that professional review is pending. No credential is ever shown that the person does not hold.
- Not advice. Every page carries the same disclosure: general information, not tax advice for a particular return. A licensed CPA or enrolled agent should review a return before it is filed.
- Corrections. Write to [email protected] with the page and the source that contradicts it. Corrections are made on the page with the date updated.
